Computer Technician / Systems Admin Support Role (Position Filled)

Strategic Data is seeking a full time Systems Administrator / Computer Technician to support our Systems Administrator and our Computer Technician / Systems Administrator. This is an ideal role for a new Graduate or a Trainee. However, we would also consider someone with some experience.

Our Systems Administrator is a role primarily responsible for the Strategic Data network of computers (office and co-lo centre) running mainly Linux. We also have a Support Engineer / Systems Administrator responsible for IT support for our clients and internal maintenance of PCs – with a more Windows background.

This support role could be filled on a part time basis if a suitable applicant had a strong preference. Similarly, applicants may have varying experience in terms of windows / Linux experience. Many of our clients have need for windows expertise – our emphasis, however, where possible is on open source platforms and applications.

The Network:
Strategic Data has recently moved to Fitzroy. Its newly set-up office has approximately 30 PCs and laptops (combination of Linux, windows & Mac operating systems) and 10 servers (mainly Linux with 1 or 2 exceptions). We have off-site servers for backup, secure storage and web-hosting machines – This comprises of some 12-15 machines, all running on Linux.

The Fitzroy office IT setup includes a VOIP phone system (Asterisk), cat 6a cabling with substantial capacity for growth, integration of alarm setup & electricity controls on the network and a range of servers covering firewall, DMZ, development area, file and email functions.

Computer Tech / Systems Admin Support Role:
The person in this role will work closely with our Systems Administrator (responsible overall for our network and hosting machines) and Support Engineer/Systems Admin (responsible for client work).

Subject to the successful applicant’s skills, the role will include a combination of:

• onsite support for clients (PC setup, LAN / ISP connection setup,  printer setup etc)
• Phone help-desk work (as above but over the phone)
• Advice re purchasing of equipment
• Software installs
• Arranging hardware and software purchases
• Domain name registrations
• Web hosting administration
• Email administration
• Internal support – PC maintenance
• Network administration support
•  Script programming

Regardless of relative experience (traineeship, new grad, someone with some experience), the role will be strongly supported by supervision and training from other staff.

The person we are seeking will have a combination of at least some of the following:

• IT Quals
• Experience in some area of Computer Tech’ or Sys Admin related work (casual / as a hobby or the like is acceptable)
• Linux (debian) knowledge and/or
• Knowledge of hardware
• Interest in Sys’ Administration
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Interest in / commitment to open source software

Salary Range:
Subject to skills and experience - $36k to $46k (+ bonus)
