A smart, thorough coder who likes doing a good job and avoids cutting corners if possible. Being well practiced at testing and appreciating an elegant solution to a problem are great. The ability to talk with non-programming types would be nice too.
Object-oriented Perl, experience with PostgreSQL (and MySQL or SQLite), as well as a source control system like git or Subversion are highly regarded.
Exposure to Linux or any Unix environment is also important.
Bonus if you're familiar with Moose, Catalyst, DBIx::Class, Template::Toolkit, and have contributed to any open source projects such as CPAN. Knowing any JavaScript (such as jQuery), CSS and HTML won't hurt, either.
Strategic Data, a small business located in the heart of lovely Fitzroy in Melbourne. We have a small, well versed programming team using Modern Perl techniques including the Moose object system, Catalyst and all that stuff listed above running on Apache on Debian servers.
We run systems to serve highly customisable web surveys, and do various consulting, data processing, warehousing and reporting, including handling health data for government organisations and universities.
The work conditions are good and the employees happy. We have a dart board and decent coffee, both of which help. We also send employees to conferences such as OSDC and OSCON, and employees contribute to various open source projects.
$60,000 to $90,000 (+super + bonus)
Note that if you are a new graduate or have limited experience, do NOT apply for this job. See our advertisement for a Graduate Programmer and the Perl Scholarship program at Perl Training Scholarship 2010
