A bit of an intro to Strategic Data...
Strategic Data does a lot of different stuff. Have a look at the rest of our web site and you’ll probably get some sort of an idea.
Projects / Areas of service delivery
We’re involved in a range of projects covering quite a few areas of service delivery. Heres a quick overview.
“Bureau” Services - data entry & scanning.
Our data entry projects range from little batches of a hundred or so surveys for management consultants who do culture surveys through to large surveys of all the schools in Victoria. Sometimes we do analysis to go with it, sometimes we don’t. Scanning jobs include scannable surveys with complex validation processes to follow the scanning down to the occasional “I’ve deleted my PhD thesis document - but heres a paper copy”.
Databases & Data Processing
Size varies. Complexity varies. A small data processing job might involve simply re-coding some data and merging data files. At the other end of the spectrum, we have developed a database for Department of Health and Ageing to collect, process and manage mental health data from across all jurisdictions in Australia. Where we can, it’s done with open-source.
Web Development
We’re not graphic designers - but we do lots of web-based functionality. At the lower end, it might just be installing a web-form for a graphic designer. At the complex high-end, we developed whole on-line databases -
www.lgpro.com,
www.mhnocc.org and
www.philanthropy.org.au.
People / Workplace
Strategic Data’s offices had, till recently, been in Carlton for nearly 10 years. The office had become somewhat squashed given our growth.
We’ve recently moved to a newly re-fitted open plan office among Johnston Street’s Spanish bars & cafes just near Brunswick St.
Comfortable, relaxed and fairly minimal on hierarchy sums it up.
There are generally around 15 to 20 people in the office - programmers, admin, techies, data entry operators, etc. Generally people are somewhat multi-skilled without too much of a tight “job description”.
